created from the program Walk through Raster II, originally created in 1966 by Nake and revamped in 2004.

Since the Etzold Collection contains a bundle of early computer art from the 1960s and 1970s, the request for loans for the Kunsthalle Bremen and the ZKM in Karlsruhe led to contact with Prof. Nake, who was surprised that his works remained unchanged in the Etzold Collection to find. This is how the idea for this annual gift came about, which is also a small homage to the Etzold Collection. The starting point was the “Walk through Raster” program that Frieder Nake had developed in 1966 and with which, among other things, several sheets from the Etzold Collection were created. On the occasion of the exhibition in Bremen, the core of the program was taken up in cooperation with Matthias Krauß, Frieder Nake and Susanne Grabowski and redeveloped in an expansion of its potential for today’s technical conditions.
Frieder Nake explains the connections between linear chains of signs, which are randomly selected from a given repertoire according to certain probabilities, but are not subject to free chance, but are controlled in the transitions from one sign to the next, on a separate sheet of text that each graphic to explain the theoretical background is attached. The 40 sheets were created as witnesses to the existence of the program mentioned on one day in October 2005. Each sheet is unique and cannot be reproduced as such. But they stay connected through the program.
