The portfolio was commissioned by Systems Dimensions Limited, an early Canadian computer services firm, in 1973 as a way of promoting computers not only as a tool to expand industrial and administrative efficiency, but also as an new tool for artistic image-making. The portfolio commissioned nine international artists and academics in the field of computer science – among them Manfred Mohr, Georg Nees, Manuel Barbadillo, and Lebanese-Canadian Roger Vilder – to develop a series of computer-generated art. The resulting images are extraordinary, depicting complex patterns and bold colours generated from mathematical algorithms and machine code. Marking an important development of both abstraction and non-human generation, these are exceptional examples of some of the first wholly digital artworks.
