description provided by the artist:
Androgyny (6 Men + 6 Women), 1982, was one of my first composite portraits. It remains my personal favorite as the image itself seems to be a morph that works on a more perceptual level than is usually seen simply as the result of the process of combining faces together. Sometimes the image looks more masculine to me, and sometimes it looks quite a bit more feminine. If you cover the mouth when looking at the image, the shifting of whether it appears more male or female begins anew. Therefore, the portrait becomes less about the process used in creating it and is more about how each of us perceives the masculine and/or feminine inherent in the reading of faces.
