“Born in 1928 in Kornwestheim, Germany. Kirchberger studied at the State Academy of Art and Design in Stuttgart from 1950–1954, where he also made prints for Willi Baumeister. In 1956 he went to London and became friends with Lawrence Alloway. He and Georg Karl Pfahler founded gruppe 11 in Stuttgart and he began exploring Art informel. gruppe 11 had exhibitions in Munich, Brussels, Rome, and London in 1957–58. He continued to maintain close contact with the Pop art scene in the UK. In 1959 his interest shifted from Art informel to firmly constructed color forms. In 1962 he and Reinhard Döhl began experimenting with integrating text and image, and Kirchberger became part of a circle of artists around Max Bense. In 1964 he taught at the School of Applied Arts in Krefeld and began working with do-it-yourself paintings, in which individual color planes are indicated only through words. 1967 was the peak of his hard-edge phase, during which he took part in numerous international exhibitions. Kirchberger died in Göppingen in 2010.”
