Description

Translation from inside magazine:

The computer has proven to be an excellent tool for cataloging and analyzing works of art and the remains of ancient cultures. But it has also demonstrated its ability to construct (new) forms and modify them according to laws dictated by man or suggested by chance, in such a way that it surpasses, in speed and rigor, human ability of execution—but never, mind you, human ability of conception.

The machine can even stimulate the artist and sometimes provide a healthy dose of inspiration. But it bears repeating—at the risk of reiterating the obvious—the computer does nothing on its own, far removed as it is from passion, willpower, and initiative.

The most refined applications, and their very limitations, indicate that authentic artists have nothing to fear from this intellectual instrument, formidable in many ways, but inexorably tied to quantity.

Our supplement aims to illustrate the computer/image relationship through a series of experiences spanning a period of just over ten years.

Readers will be forgiven for the many gaps in this documentation; for our part, we thank those who contributed, especially François Lerossignol of IBM France, who was the first to systematically collect the numerous contributions.
